no new digital art this week but I edited collages of some ink people from my sketchbook. a few of these are requests from my friend Carlos.

the point of this sketchbook is to try to draw as if I were a middle schooler drawing just for the sake of it, no expectations of high quality, lots of colored pencils and crayons, and lots of fun!

what made you pick up the current muse(s) you have? Obviously, I'm heavily influenced by a set list of characters I personally love, which means I come up with a take/portrayal as I delve deeper into the lore. I tend to have a preference for side characters, rather than protags or lore heavy ones, bc of the freedom I get... BUT at the same time I've had numerous muses that carry a lot of weight in their respective franchises (see: Seto Kaiba, Captain Rex, rival Barry, Richter Belmont and Sea Dragon Kanon just to name a few).

I mainly write as canon characters, I genuinely have little to no interest in making or RPing as an OC. At most, I have 1 OC in two out of the RPCs I'm currently part of. Which explains this huge disparity.

is there anything you don’t like to write? My hard nos are Incest, Adult/minor types of relationships. Bodily fluids/toilet stuff and fetish focused RPs. One-liners and really short replies aren't fun for me, sure, they can be fun for crack/joke interactions. But they won't last long. I really love working and expanding on the source material, so RPs for me really need to have that good plotting to back it up. While I'm totally open for exploring darker/taboo subjects (e.g.: adultery, toxic relationships, etc.), they MUST carry weight on the characters and be handled accordingly.

is there anything you really enjoy writing? GIMME ALL THE WEIRD COMBOS TO INTERACT WITH!!! Characters that never met or barely interacted with one another in canon but, they can interact in our RPs!!! My jam is doing worldbuilding and expanding on the source material!!! I also enjoy writing comedy, fluff, romance, slice-of-life, over-arching stories that connect/get refferenced in other threads.

how do you come up with headcanons? I look for plotholes or anything that was barely touched upon, in the source material, and I go off from it. I try establishing connections or make them clearer, to serve as future reference for me and my RP partners. I also love taking influence from other medias I'm into.

do you write in silence or do you play music? I used to be able to multitask a lot easier in the past. Now, I mainly prefer writing in silence. Only in very rare cases, I may play some kind of lo-fi beat or lounge music.

do you plan your replies or wing them? It depends on the thread in specific! Most of them have been plotted out, so I go off what we have laid out. Only in a few cases I try to wing it.

do you enjoy shipping? YES YES. GIMME. However, due to some bad experiences in the past, I'm really picky with platonic and familial stuff (popular fanons my beloathed).

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO WRITE WHEN IT COMES TO SHIPPING?:

My only real hard limits are incest (Aiolia/Aiolos, Saga/Kanon, Richter/any other Belmont) and minor/adult type of ships. Besides those, I have some specific few NOTPs that I'm just straight up, not interested in writing (Annette/Richter).

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?:

Large age gaps between adults? HELL YEAH, GIVE ME. The more the merrier for me, I don't mind it. What about teens in that 16-19 period? In my eyes this is in a grey area of sorts. I get this is like, High school level of new ppl coming in and dating students that are graduating from it. So, in a context like that, I wouldn't mind it too much, like it is not the end of the world for me. But I'd rather not do anything, coming close on the NSFW side of things. We could inferr it as a thing between them for plot progression/character development reasons, but actually write it? Nah, that's too much for me.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?:

It heavily depends on whether or not we click as partners and if our muses have a chemistry as well. Shipping with me requires the person to stick for the long run, because I really enjoy delving into things. With that said, I've mellowed out A LOT, from way back in the day. As a result, I'm way more receptive to ships than ever! With that said, as a personal preference, I still hold onto my CanonxCanon bias. It's just overall easier for me to write.

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY ARE CONSIDERED NS/FW?:

Anything in the slightest suggestive, quickly gets tagged as suggestive cw. Smut is meant to be done in my nsfw tumblr side blog, however. I’ve been prefering to delegate those kinds of threads, to Discord.

I can actually sort of add my own experience to this, with the caveat that I pay very little attention to my AO3 stats and honestly only ever throw stuff up there when it's that or share a gdoc with several people.

Most of my fic is in three fandoms - Saint Seiya, an 80s anime with a not-big but pretty dedicated fandom; 3rd Life SMP, a Minecraft youtube series that was insanely popular and rewrote most of how Minecraft youtuber fandom acted; and Ace Attorney, a video game series from 2006 that sometimes does show up in con artist alleys still.

Only one of my StS works has over fifteen kudos, and that's the one with 10k hits and 10 chapters. It has that many exclusively because I was (and still am) friends with a very popular StS artist on twitter who drew me some fanart and linked to my fic. The fic itself focuses on characters that don't actually have any characterization canonically, and is pretty genfic.

My AA fic, even though it's a pretty active fandom, have maybe 100 hits and three kudos between the lot of it. This is because I wrote an AU that I proceeded to Not Bother Explaining, entirely for myself and my fiance.

However, my 3rd Life fic I still get emails one a day letting me know someone's given it a kudos, and there's only three fics I wrote for that.

Best guess on why my 3L fic is still hanging in there, despite the fandom having moved on to the next season of the Life series? (I think we're up to six seasons now.) Because I got in pretty early in a fandom mostly full of teenagers and slammed down the "I'm a reasonably experienced fic writer, here's the most popular ship with everyone's favourite codependent trope, and I have a good amount of experience writing smut that's enjoyable to read."

I'm actually pretty sure I was one of the first to slam down explicit fic for 3L, let alone the most popular ship of the time. Unsurprisingly, that's what people were really happy about in the comments.

This post checks out to my experience. You want the popularity, just get in early, write the big ships, write mostly palatable stuff and throw in one or two distinct* qualities to your writing style. (*Being the only smut writer, pioneering a specific meta theory that people really like, etc etc.) Keeps tags and summaries reasonably small, keep to popular tropes, don't write too long or too short.

Then I guess, when you've got a bunch of dedicated readers, hit 'em with the 100k rarepair AU with just enough bait to lock them in with you and then they have no choice but to keep loving you through your bullshit. (This line is tongue-in-cheek.)

I personally don't advise writing fic to try and be popular. It's more fun to just write whatever you want and not check the numbers. But if you want to anyway, yeah, this checks out.

i also have a whole post i could write about how kudos on ao3 correspond to marketability rather than quality, exactly how the actual publishing industry works, but. the question is… do i have the energy

alright so half way through the year (2021), reading classics/older stuff only as much as possible n these are my top 10 reads so far:

10. battle angel alita aka gunnm

pretty good, the definition of strength and self are some of my favourite themes, great art & aesthetics, the story was just a little bit choppy at times but all in all pretty good as I said

9. shaman king

another pretty good one, I think it had a lot of good messages and I loved how philosophical n thought provoking it was and tried to be showing a variety of approaches to life, great art & a pretty good cast

8. hellsing

big fan of chaos, destruction and so on so I really enjoyed it, the only downfall was the simplistic plot & how predictable it was that alucard would always pull through but watching the cast dance around to the tune of madness was undoubtedly entertaining

7. drifting classroom

really old but really good especially for how short it was, pretty fast paced but the story was well handled and never really felt like it was going off track and even had a few comedic moments, honestly didn't really expect to like it but the mc was great, cast was great, art though old was also pretty good... honestly just really good lmao

6. uzumaki

I hate sp*rals now but this was really good, I'd always heard how great junji ito is but finally getting around to his works for myself and he's truly a master of the genre, innovative, creative and all with such little material tbh.. like spir*ls??? who knew

5. remina

another piece by ito, really short, only 6 chapters but it's absolutely phenomenal what he did with those 6 chapters

man... I don't like cars like that and honestly I hate driving but this manga was great, despite the fact that they refused to draw the characters decently, the art was great in literally every other department and not just looking pretty but everything was clearly drawn to immerse the reader in a certain atmosphere whether that was the speed of the car, the slowness of thought, pain of loss, melancholy of stillness it was all just beautiful, the story was pretty solid, somehow kept me entertained by somehow excellently diversifying the feel of every race because honestly they should fundamentally all be the same but the atmosphere around every race was different and engaging in it's own way... absolutely loved it

3. dragon ball (z)

the first manga I read this year, dragon ball straight into dragon ball z and honestly I loved it way more than I thought I would, like I figured I'd have to turn off my brain and just accept fight fight fight but the whole story from db to DBZ, story, characters, everything was masterfully done, sure it can be said to be a simple pursuit of strength but I loved how Goku wasn't about violence he just wanted to be free and to be the best self he could be and that's something I never knew before reading, I'd always thought he was just dumb muscle but based on his origins I think his simplicity is a strong point, great cast, phenomenal art, really good vibes, absolutely loved it

always heard of it, finally got to it, glad it lived up to it's reputation, really really good, great ever unfolding story, loved the constant bashing of the american government, beautiful aesthetic, great cast... yh

great teacher onizuka... didn't have any expectations really but man... what a great manga... very touching, hilarious, decent art, pretty good cast... of course unrealistic in a sense, lots of hijinx n all that but really really touching...

ao3 Tag Game

1. How many works do you have on ao3?

I currently have 38 works on my ao3 ~ but I do have 79 stories in my old FFNET account (mostly Harry Potter fics, tho) and about 15 stories in my LiveJournal, but some of them are posted on more than one place, so there's some overlap here. I'd say I have about 100 fics published at the moment.

2. What is your total ao3 word count?

Over 250k only on ao3 and half of that was written in this year alone, so I can say more than half of that number is just TOG fics, lol.

3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

Oh, sweet baby Jesus. Only on ao3, I have stories for The Old Guard (movie and comics), La Casa de Papel, Teen Wolf, Inception, Supernatural, Death Note, X-Men (comics), Inglourious Basterds, The Walking Dead and Star Trek (TOS). But I also have written tons of Harry Potter (in Portuguese), some Final Fantasy 7, Star Trek (2009), Watchmen, Edgar Allan Poe (it's about detective Dupin, mind you), Glee, Heroes, Saint Seiya and Bakuretsu Hunters. Yeah, I know. I'm all over the place.

4. What are your Top 5 fics by kudos?

lol, my most read fics on ao3 are all TOG fics, except for the 1st place, which frankly will probably change in a few months, since that fic has been up for a decade and my TOG works are brand new and full of possibilities. :D

1) Sometimes (I think I can dream) – it’s a Daryl/Glenn (TWD) I wrote back in 2011. It’s the only fic I wrote for that fandom, but I’m so damn proud of it. 18k words of porn and the best first kiss I have written.

2) Wistful is the rain – Joe/Nicky omegaverse and my pride and joy. It has some actual plot and world-building and it was also the first time I ever managed to finish writing a story while I was publishing it.

3) birth among the ruins – my very first omegaverse, which I wrote mostly out of spite and ended up liking a lot, cause life is that funny. I loved playing with the religious themes here and the fic is quite good.

4) the stiff heart – my BigBang fic, which took me months to write because I did so much research for it. It's my love letter to Yusuf, my beloved, and beautifully illustrated by the super talented @eiseul.

5) A potter’s field – my debut fic for TOG, only 1K and done in a couple of hours after I joined the top!Joe server. I started to write quite late for this fandom, but boy did I start with a bang.

5. Do you always respond to comments? Why or why not?

6. What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

Hmm, I wrote a lot of Angst™ back in the day. My most read Harry Potter fic is an angst fest, but since I started to write in English, I had dialled it down, possibly because as I got older I also became less... edgy. I mean, I still write tons of angst, but I tend to stick with happy endings whenever I can. On ao3, my angstier fics are probably Rust (Death Note) and Heroes for Ghosts (Inglourious Basterds), but the angst ending is only because I followed the canon. For TOG, most of my fics have some angst, but everything works out in the end.

7. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?

Not really, no. I do read them, tho.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

In TOG I had to deal with a couple of smartasses who think they're fighting racism by sticking a dick up Joe’s ass, but outright hate? No, I can’t say that I have (and I know I'm one of the lucky ones). For Harry Potter on the other hand, oh boy, I have had entire fics deleted from FFNET because I wrote *gasp* g a y p o r n. The early 2000s were WILD, y'all.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

The very first fic I wrote in my life was a PWP and on ao3 most of my fics are rated E or M. Out of the 38 works I have posted there, 22 have the tag “Porn with Feelings” and I promise you I don't tag it lightly.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not my own fic, but I had translations stolen more than once.

11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I have done it for Harry Potter and had a blast. I love it because it's about writing and editing so it doesn't end up like each part/chapter is written by a completely different person, it has to have some unity and that's hard, but it can be very rewarding. More recently I have co-written a JoeNicky omegaverse with the amazing @quincette: it’s called Youthful Indiscretions and it was the most fantastic experience ever and I can't wait to do it again.

12. What’s your all time favorite ship?

The fuck is this question? Ugh, okay. My favourite ship is usually my current ship because it’s where I’m invested at the moment, but well. The ship I have written the largest number of fics for is Sirius/Remus (Harry Potter), but I’d say that Joe/Nicky is probably getting close in word count by now. I can see myself being a JoeNicky fan for the rest of my life, because this couple has everything that I love, it has enemies to lovers, being very horny for one another, they're interracial and interfaith, it has found family and they're c a n o n and cannot be killed.

13. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Bakuretsu Hunters (Sorcerer Hunters), a manga/anime from the 1990s. I was 17 going 18 when I wrote 2,4k words of porn about Gateau/Marron. It was the only fic I wrote for that ship, tho.

14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

The fuck is this question again??? Ugh, I am gonna stick with my fics written in English, so I'd say it’s currently a tie between Wistful is the rain (TOG), Sometimes (I think I can dream) (TWD) and Rapid Eye Movement (Inception, mind you this fic is still a wip on ao3, but it’s complete in my LJ. I will get around in bringing all my English fics to ao3… someday). They're stories that took me months to write, all canonverse and I got amazing feedback regarding the character's voices, which for me is the most important thing when writing fanfic, tbh, so I'm just really proud of them. Plus, they're stories I wrote in my second language, which I learned by myself, by reading other people's fics, so for me, it's a great achievement in itself.

My favorite character must be Rhadamanthys but I really can't explain why. I just really like the headcanons I have about him hehe. Same goes for Sylphide and Pharaoh but hey, let's be honest here, no one knows who they are lol

Also my favorite gold saint is Kanon if you count him as one, and if not it's Milo and Dohko.

Who´s your absolute hatecharacter and why?

I absolutely hate Shun. I know he's suppose to show that you can be "feminine" and kick ass at the same time but god, as a feminist, i can't stand him. All he ever does, particularly in Hades' chapters, is screaming Seiya's name like shut up bro-

Also I don't like Saori, but is it really surprising? Sasha is a way better Athena 😌

i introduced myself on my about post a while ago but i didn’t know there was such a thing as a ‘whump intro tag’ lol so let’s gooo!

from the post: hi, i’m sagus. ♀. writer. fan of many a thing. over 20 years old and loved whump since before i even knew how to spell (no really, i have a distinct memory about it), for yet some unfathomable reason

other details you might be interested in are that i’m a degree’d creative writing major (don’t let the grammar here fool you, having good english and putting too much effort into fic is pretty much the only thing i do right now), and i have a nurse for a bestie who is very happy to enable me :)

as for this blog, its main focus is just my faves being unconscious. i’m probably weird around here in the fact i typically only enjoy whump if it results in the character dropping like a god damn sack of bricks lol so in my writing, whumpees tend to black out...a lot. my favorite tropes are temporary death (particularly if the reviving happens right on the spot), possession, and anytime the whumpee tries to take a metaphorical...or literal..bullet for a loved one~

as for fandoms, i’ve been writing a couple series (a third one in development now directly because of this month’s event) for the ninjas go spin show, and i’ll update my saint seiya one eventually (lots of shun whump planned there...). i’ve also done a rokka no yuusha oneshot that might be getting a second chapter soon-ish from vol6 set during the five hours adlet lost (i compiled a whump summary for the volumes after s1, in case someone’s interested in that). links are in my pinned post

9. Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? Do you wish you were the other?

ALAS I AM APPARENTLY A LONGFIC WRITER,,,, or like, a very short tiny vignette, no in-between.  I used to be incapable of writing anything long (all my shit from like 2007-2012 was under like 5k pretty much), but now it’s like. fuck! every story i want to write ends up spiralling out into like 50k+ projects /o\ I’m definitely a plotter. I wish I could be more spontaneous, but I do much, much better when I have some kind of endgame in mind. I can kinda fudge the middle, but the beginning and end have to be set :/

13. Do you share your writing online? (Drop a link!) Do you have projects you’ve kept just for yourself?

yep! here’s my ao3, which is pretty much just mdzs right now, but I’ve got some Saint Seiya stuff planned 👀 truly getting ready to return to my roots. saint seiya was the first fandom i wrote for! :D if you’re looking for my tumblr ficlets, I believe the tag is #myficlet

however, in terms of original prose and poetry, it mostly all just stays in folders on my hard drive. :’D I’ve entered some poetry and prose into local writing contests and won before, so my work exists out in the ether, but one day I’d like to have published books :’) I have so much poetry that kind of just sits around, and i’m like maybe?? it would be cool to share some of it? but all of it needs more editing and refining, I almost never edit my poetry it just kinda comes out in a mess and then I don’t look at it for years, so none of it is like good. a lot of it has potential, I think, but I have like, maaaaybe one poem that I would say is almost good lol.

I have like five nano novels hanging out as well, so just like. hundreds of k of words stacked up over the last decade and a half :’D

14. At what point in writing do you come up with a title?

depends! sometimes I think of a title and a concept at the same time and try to weave them together. sometimes it comes in the middle, and sometimes I’m scrambling right at the end. sometimes I’m struggling for the whole fucking time (me with lxc fic right now good god this title has been eluding me for MONTHS)

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

okay, since you’re the one asking, I’m going to talk about my painting selections in this little tumblr not-fic i wrote about hyoshun even though I know you don’t really do the classic series, but hey.

I’ve seen both Aivazovsky’s Ninth Wave and Repin’s Sadko in person, but I’ve studied all of the paintings that were included. I’ve never been to the Tretyakov, so I haven’t seen any of those in person, but GOD i want to. All of the paintings that I talked about are some of my favorite 19th century russian works except Sadko, which is nice, but not like, one of my favorites. I just like it.

here is why I chose those works in particular:

1. Aivazovsky’s Ninth Wave is a fucking experience to witness. It’s impossible to convey the presence of it, the size of it, on a computer screen. you feel swallowed up by the ocean and the light and the terror and the beauty of it--even as you face death, you also face the sun. you know, just like. peak sublime. I really think Shun would find the concept of the sublime very moving, given what we see of his character in canon: he cares, deeply and viscerally about the inherent value of life, but sees himself as small within it. And I don’t necessarily think that scares him so much as it awes him sometimes. He knows his own value and strength, respects risk, and respects sacrifice. I think would relate a lot to the Romantic artists who looked out at the vastness of the world and reacted with wonder and terror.

I think Shun very much feels a deep sense of wonder at being alive, of existing, and that he takes that very seriously. idk, there’s that moment at the 12 temples, when he stops to smell the roses at Aphrodite’s temple. it’s like, yeah, we’re in the midst of fighting for our lives, but god. there is such beauty here. facing the sun even as you face death. I think he would like that painting a lot.

2. Knowing Repin’s other work, I find the Sadko really beautiful and charming and surprising! It’s such a fun subject for a painting--instead of painting a religious scene, it’s a scene from a bylina, about a man named Sadko. I believe here is the scene where he’s asked to choose a wife from a line of beautiful sea maidens, but all he wants is to return to the surface and live with his human wife that he loves so much. and it’s okay! he does! the painting is lovely and just really visually stunning. and there’s something really moving about the way that sadko has eyes only for his wife on the surface, dressed in plain clothes, out of reach, even as these dazzling women laden with jewels parade before him. aaaaaaaaaa. anyways, I think Shun would like this painting too, for those reasons!!

3. Now the Tretyakov paintings that I’ve never seen, but GOD they just. they get me right in the heart. first, Conscience, Judas, by Nikolai Ge. it’s hard for me to describe exactly what I’m feeling when I look at it, but that really vicious white on Judas’s robe, the coldness of it, the alienation of a traitor. I want to weep for judas. I am not christian, so my interpretations of the bible are largely moot and uninformed, but I’ve always been intrigued by the thought that like--without judas’ betrayal, christ could not have risen. without the fall, there cannot be a triumph. that doesn’t mean that judas was acting for that reason, i certainly don’t know enough about biblical studies to make any kind of interpretation, but in the sense that like--christ had to fall and judas was the instrument of it. imagine the remorse of knowing. there’s something very human and sad about watching everything you loved and betrayed walk away from you into the darkness while you are left behind. without you, it could never have happened. i don’t know. there’s something about the nature of unforgiveable sins in there. i think about Shun’s speech to Balron Lune and I think he would feel some kind of way looking at this painting.

4. Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, by Perov--this painting kills me every time i see it. again, not christian, but like. the agony of christ. god. the nature of sacrifice. knowing that you must suffer and die, but oh! you would rather live, please if only you could live. let this cup pass me by. that on its own is already so much to sit with. and I think Shun, as well as the other saints, for very obvious reasons, probably have a lot of complicated emotions surrounding the concept of sacrifice and doubt. and idk, whenever there’s a moment when you feel like you are reaching through time and space to realize that someone out there has felt the way you are feeling, it’s like. that’s a lot. it hurts.

5. The Demon Seated, Vrubel: aaaaaaaaaaa. one of my favorite paintings!!! the demon is beautiful, and the demon is terribly melancholic, and the demon is alone, and the demon is powerful sitting amidst the blooming flowers and the setting sun. the gentle face in contrast with the muscular body. the inherent negative aspect of a demon in contrast with the subject’s heroism. I think that this would remind shun very much of his own brother, who is so angry and violent and dark, but whom he still sees as gentle and loving still. i think shun would look at this painting and see ikki sitting there, alone, watching the sunset on some distant shore. as for hyoga, I think it would be hard for him to see this without seeing shun after the hades arc: a kind and beautiful man, a demon by nature not by choice. someone soft made unwillingly hard. a murderer who would ferry even centipedes out of the house to safety.
